Around the year 900 the vikings became the harshest and least controllable people.

When the peace returned, thanks to Alan Wrybeard, the French culture and language made a large impact on Brittany.

In our land many leaders came with another culture and language.

“Souvereign duke” Alan called himself:

Brittany wasn’t going to get eaten by other countries just yet.

The Duchy of Brittany remained an independent country for 600 years: independent of France

Foreign politics of Brittany swung between two big countries

Foreing politics of Brittany swung between England and France

The aristocracy was in favour of France and the people in favour of England

These reasons didn’t run deep in the heart of the Breton people.

The Bretons wages many wars

With the English and the French

But Brittany remained the country the furthest on the path of democracy in Europe

“A gentle man” every Breton was called, to show that aid of the law was there for every citizen

Our ancestors knew nor slavery nor hundred-year war.

Silver plates were in each little house before the conquest by the French army.

In the last years we were still free and among the most free countries and among those strongest at sea.
