El prófugo [English translation]

On the morning of the 10th of May

the alarm was heard in the prison,

they are the sirens announcing

that a prisoner was about to escape.

The guards were ready with carbines;

they searched and searched restlessly,

they can't find the inmate,

who knows how he could have escaped.

Curious people have started to riot

in front of a sad and somber house,

because inside they are watching

an inmate crying.

Crying with immense sorrow,

a sad and fatal sorrow,

when they come to apprehend him,

he could only tell them:

"Leave me, leave me

leave me for a moment more,

it's been five years

since the last time I saw my mother,

my little old lady is ill,

only God knows if she will live".

His captors also cried

then they knelt to pray,

because the prisoner put his lips

over his mother's forehead.

Her cold body was stiff,

for she had died suddenly,

now the guards have completed their duty

and they take him towards the prison.

"Leave me, leave me

leave me for a moment more,

it's been five years

since the last time I saw my mother,

my little old lady, my little old lady,

may God keep you safe in eternity".
