What is hope

For those hopeless

That strength undone

Shows its fitness in toil

Untested, undeveloped

The embryotic spirit whimpers

Seeking guidance and comfort

Character, a nebulous trait

Walks close by in trust

No force can thwart that

The voice of hope stands near

Those who look for it are lost

For it is always within them

But an infant is helpless

Though within an adult body

There are no answers there

The cries of a child are pleas

Those of desperation unheard

They hope for basic needs

But those needs become greater

Undefined by what hope is

Expectations beyond measure

Deplete a vacuous soul, needy

Its voice loud and empty too

There is hope even in death

In the pains of life ceasing

In torments of days releasing

Still hope springs eternal

What is hopelessness

For mortal bonds seemingly so

That all should find itself still

Unknown and feared, meek

Those cripples by induction

They numb with poisons got

Confusing stasis with strength

And the frailties of body, of age

Cannot dictate daily outcome

If they are not granted passage

On the journey of one's being

To breathe each day, faithfully

Awaiting death's hold, bidding
