John Denver - Silent Night
John Denver - Silent Night
Stille Nacht, heilige Nacht
Alles schläft, einsam wacht
Nur das träute hochheilige Paar
Holder Knabe im lockigen Haar
Schlaf in himmlischer Ruh!
Schlaf in himmlischer Ruh!
[Spoken:]
On December 24th, 1818, the curate of a parish in Oberndorf, Austria, Joseph Mohr, gave a poem that he had written to a friend of his, Franz Gruber, who was also the choirmaster and organist in that church.
He asked Mr. Gruber if he would write music for his poem, and that he might write it for two solo voices and guitar accompaniment; because, the organ being broken, he desperately wanted music to be part of their Christmas Eve service.
Mr. Gruber wrote the melody to a song which has become the most beloved of all Christmas carols: "Stille Nacht"; in English, "Silent Night."
Schlaf in himmlischer Ruh; Sleep in heavenly peace.
Silent night (silent night),
Holy night (holy night),
All is calm (all is calm),
All is bright (all is bright),
Round yon Virgin mother and child
Holy infant, so tender and mild
Sleep in heavenly peace
Sleep in heavenly peace
