Jon Andreas visa [English translation]
Jon Andreas visa [English translation]
It was the third of June an ordinary drowsy day in the north
We were out working on the field, my brother and I
And by supper we quit and set off back home to grab a bite
And mother cried in the doorway: Don't you drag that filth with you inside!
And then by the table she said: I heard this morning
That Jon Andreas Fjäll, jumped from the old railway bridge
Father said to mother, as he lit his pipe: What did I tell you,
that Jon Andreas was a coward, you'd know as well as me
I've got five acres left to manage, this day won't be enough.
And mother said that it was still a pity about that boy, say whatever you may.
It seems nothing ever turns out well for them up be the heath
And now that Jon Andreas Fäll has jumped from the old railway bridge.
My brother said he rememberd when he, I and Andreas Jon
went to the movies last year and they dropped down a snowball on my back
And didn't he see us talking by the café last Sunday,
there is something going on, huh, it doesn't seem quite right.
I saw him by the lumbermill just yesterday, up by the heath
And mother says that Jon Andreas jumped from the old railway bridge
Mother said to me: But child, what happened to your appetite?
You're white as a sheet and haven't touched your food
I got a visit this morning from our new evangelist
He'll come for dinner here this Sunday evening. Oh yes, be sure,
he saw a girl who looked like you, up by the heath,
And she and Jon Andreas threw something off the old railway bridge.
Now it has been a year since we heard about Andreas Jon.
My brother, he got married, and has a job by the station.
We hade a plague here before, father got it and he died this spring.
And now since mother's gotten weak I help out the best I can.
And sometimes by the evening I pick flowers up by the heath
And stand and watch, as they drift away under the old railway bridge.
