O Cacilheiro [English translation]
O Cacilheiro [English translation]
There, a cacilheiro goes sailing on Mar da Palha
As a convoy from Lisbon, traveling on the water
Cacilhas and Seixal, Montijo and Barreiro.
There's few of the Tejo, few of the Tejo, and much of regret.
Through the bridge, cars and tourists pass by,...
as in anywhere worldwide,...
but, even having longer fores, the bridge has not a view
such as the cacilheiro's ledges have.
The cacilheiro carries lovers, sailors...
soldiers and workers ...
and leaves from a quay,...
which has the smells of newspapers,...
strawberries and flowers.
It returns contently,..
it has led many people ...
and never get tired of doing so.
It looks like a small toy boat,...
launched in the Tejo...
by a child.
Sailing on a trail of foam,...
there, the cacilheiro goes by the Tejo in freedom...
and the Lisbon's streets, without any hurry,...
took a round-trip ticket to it.
Alfama, Madragoa, Bairro Alto,
Here and there, sailing in a toy-like boat
Half of Lisbon waits on the margin's asphalt,...
but the longing, in advance, drifts away
soldados e trabalhadores,
que cheira a jornais,
Regressa contente,
e nunca se cansa.
lançado no Tejo
If the cacilheiro leaves forever someday,...
the heart of the water will become sadder,...
and people of Lisbon will say, as someone that cries:
"There's few of the Tejo, few of the Tejo and much of regret."
