O Enjeitado [English translation]
O Enjeitado [English translation]
Now I know where and of what I am going to die
Beside the Tagus, its banks
Gaunt and bent.
Nothing is more beautiful and sad
And the existence sublime and slow.
In the afternoon I wander through the meadows
And at night I hear the whine of the fados
Until the break of dawn.
- "Life is immense sadness" -
And then I feel the shackles of this evil.
One of these I hear singing
And my sadness returned to weigh on me:
"Nothing comforts me beyond pain".
Most do not have this my fado
For me to fill the night without love.
Here it serves nothing to die,
Where all gets lost in the frenzy of pain.
Lisbon, formerly the city of cities,
Drags the past into the present,
And sees in the ruins a glory that lies.
By this mirage I was charmed;
Also I have discovered and conquered,
For after all, of all to be the loser
Dying in the slowness of the current,
Near the grave of the noblest
Of the dreams: "All is pain."
