Hunger and ruins under mortar's fire

But the city stands strong as steel.

"O' streets of Stalingrad, you are paved with blood"

Laughs a granite lady standing on a thousand barricades.

On its frozen path the swastika knows,

That from now on, Stalingrad awaits it in every city.

The officers dance in coffee-shops to the orchestra's sound

And winter chills you to your bone

But in the prisons the air burns, as if

The Red Army choir itself were singing

It's dark, the radio is on, and seven workers

With seven cups drinking a toast for Lenin.

Stalingrad reaches farmhouses and barns,

As berets are flying in the air, a man laughs and prepares his gun.
