Pansy Division: More Lovin' From Our Oven

The fifth full-length album (and second singles/outtakes compilation) from the decidedly queer San Francisco punk-pop band Pansy Division dishes out 21 more songs about buttsex, hockey hair, loneliness, horniness, lost souls and lost causes. Occasionally melancholy, often funny, and always unapologetically horny, the group's songs are endearingly sloppy anthems—and who doesn't need anthems that directly relate to their lives More Lovin' From Our Oven is saddled at times with variations on widely available material, from an a cappella "Negative Queen" to a demo of "Fem In A Black Leather Jacket," and a five-minute "Expiration Date 01/97" is a big reason the collection sags in its midsection. But there's lots of sloppy fun here; 16 of the 21 tracks time out under two and a half minutes, and Jon Ginoli's lyrics ("Even Morrissey is happier than me," he sings on "On Any Other Day") are good-natured and appealing. When Pansy Division finds a way to capture the torrid energy of its live shows, it'll really be something; in the meantime, this set fills the gap between studio albums nicely.
