Supersuckers: Must've Been High

News   2024-07-02 05:53:16

Supersuckers' claim to fame revolves around a raunchy, white-trash, pseudo-satanic take on punk rock: Its past four albums have taken punk and roots music and fed them through amplifiers and a drunken haze to create the sort of sound that somehow didn't sound entirely out of place touring with White Zombie. But Must've Been High is, to put it mildly, a departure; here, the band has adopted a pure, old-school country sound using primarily acoustic instruments. The result maintains the group's reputation for dirty-necked debauchery—there's plenty of sex and drugs and booze in the subject matter—but the folks who discovered Supersuckers on the White Zombie tour are likely to be disappointed. Still, open-minded fans should enjoy the album for what it is: a raw, old-fashioned country record without a lot of depth but plenty of dark edges. And it scores hipster points for "Hungover Together," a low-down duet with Kelley Deal.
