Morcheeba operates in the much the same stylistic vein as Portishead: Samples and spare female vocals are subtly laid over languorous beats to create a sound that's simultaneously haunting and stylish. And despite the dipshit name—that's Morcheeba as in "more cheeba," as in "more delicious marijuana"—Who Can You Trust is an engrossing collection of mellow, tripped-out bliss. Combining acid jazz and trip hop with a generous dose of honest-to-goodness soul, the album benefits immeasurably from lazy pacing and the smoky vocal delivery of Skye Edwards. The band may be called Morcheeba, and the cover of Who Can You Trust may depict a pot plant, but the album's effects provide as much of a lethargic high as anything you're smoking.
