Du Doof [English translation]
Du Doof [English translation]
You stupid!
You are the exact opposite of smart,
you think you're hip and that's enough for you,
you're satisfied, but you aren't exactly bright,
and the worst part is: you just don't notice it.
You confuse expensive clothes with style.
You confuse quite a lot anyways.
No matter what it's about: you understand nothing.1
You stupid!
You stupid!
You are, to put it kindly, an embarrassing sight:
No idea about nothing, but an opinion about everything.
I'd rather not see you drunk,
because you're already messed up being sober.
You like to make stupid interjections.
You're at the same level as Goofy and Hein Blöd.2
No matter what it's about: you understand nothing.
You stupid!
You stupid!
Now, I've consciously worded it like this,
so that maybe even a dimwit like you can understand.
You stupid!
People like you exist a few hundred thousand times in Germany,
in cool pubs, Karstadt3, clubs and at Aral4
on the street, at McDonald's, sometimes even at camps,
even in museums and theatres (but rarely...).
You stupid!
You stupid!
You really are deranged.
Where usually the brain is, you only have cotton candy.
You stupid!
Dear God definitely has mercy on you,
because it is written: "Ignorance is bliss!".
But sometimes I ask myself: Who should adhere to this?
Can heaven cope with this many ignorant people?5
You stupid
1. He's using the "Ich verstehe nur Bahnhof." saying, which literally translates to "I only understand train station." in English. It's a common term you use when you don't understand what's going on. The catch with these lyrics though, is that he's using HAUPT-Bahnhof. Hauptbahnhof is 'central (train) station', which means the person he's referring to doesn't understand anything twofold. Bam.2. Hein Blöd is a character in TV, from the cartoon series "Captain Bluebear". 'Blöd' is also another synonym for 'stupid'.3. Karstadt is a department store.4. Aral is a gas station.5. The quote "Ignorance is bliss." is told "Blessed are the spiritually/mentally poor." in German. So in the lyrics, he's actually asking "Can heaven cope with this many blessed people?"
