Menuett [English translation]
Menuett [English translation]
I went out to the hazel bush,
There was a fire in my head.
I cut a fishing rod out of it
and so went out into the night.
When the moon saw the stars,
I went to the river, which was silver,
And caught a fish, as clear as moonlight,
With my dark hazel rod.
There was a fire in my head,
Now every night I must go fetch
The golden apples of the sun
And the silver ones of the moon.
In the moonlight I wanted
To bring my catch home from the valley,
When I heard the wind in the grass
Say my name.
In front of me in the grass by the shore
Stood a beautiful and marvelous lad,
With apple blossoms in his hair,
Who I have often seen in my dreams.
There was a fire in my head,
Now every night I must go fetch
The golden apples of the sun
And the silver ones of the moon.
He looked at me and I forgot
The green valley, and suddenly
I fell into a deep sleep
Which I thought would never end.
Since then, I've dragged myself through this world
With my hazel rod, wherever apples bloom
And hope when moonlight falls upon me,
I'll see that lad there from the river.
