Wer wir geworden sind [English translation]

The summer night from its1 prettiest side

Campfire light, loud music

Feet dance barefoot in the meadow

I am in the middle of it, but somehow also not

Because my world just softly turned itself off

And took the reins from (my) hands

Because everything in me wanders2 into the darkness

Where I am not comfortable alone in the dark

And I ask myself, how we became

Who we've become

The night so loud but in me its quiet

With each glass3 I fall a little deeper into myself4

How I became, who I've become

The night so warm and me so cold

And then for a moment I wished

You had never existed,5 oh

Because in the end a man only lets in love

From someone he believes also deserves it

Since you, I’ve barricaded myself behind walls

When(ever) sincerity flies by me6

And I ask myself, how we became

Who we've become

The night so loud but in me its quiet

With each glass I fall a little deeper into myself

How I became, who I've become

The night so warm and me so cold

And then for a moment I wished

You had never existed, oh

You bring hardship7 into my life, oh

So much emptiness, if only you weren’t there8

You throw shadows on my life, oh

You put emptiness in all my existence9

And I ask myself, how we became

Who we've become

The night so loud but in me its quiet

I have become who I have become

The night so warm and me so cold

And then for a moment I wished

You had never existed, oh

In my life

1. literally "she", referring to the "summer night"2. literally "digresses/deviates" as in "goes off into tangents"3. "mit jedem ihre Gläser" literally "with every (one) of her glasses", "her" referring to "the night". I assume meaning that "with every drink..."4. I've translated this as "einfallen" - as far as I can tell "reinfallen" is "to fall for something" as in "to be fooled by something"5. "geben" can be used to mean "is/exists" as in "es gibt", though its literal meaning is "to give". Here however, I'm fairly confident the context implies "geben" is to be translated as "exist".6. I found it quite hard to understand and translate this verse from its original form, so if you think I've made a mistake please tell me! I've tried to make as much sense of it as I can.7. literally "heaviness/gravity" or "cruelty", "Schwere" comes from the root "schwer" meaning "hard/grave/heavy"8. literally "if only you didn't exist"9. as mentioned earlier, "geben/Geben" can mean "exist"
