Cançó del cavaller Sant Jordi [English translation]
Cançó del cavaller Sant Jordi [English translation]
Up there in heaven I see a dragon
Surrounded by fire,
A dragon who guards a young maiden
In a strange place.
Her hair grows and grows
Across the universe.
The dragon won't let her live in peace;
Not now, not ever.
The girl wears a dress
As white as a nard;
On the dress's fabric, painted,
There are three thistle blossoms.
On the tips of her hairs
Moonlight licks
Shine throughout the night
One after the other.
She is being relentlessly searched
Within that great valley
By a brave young man
On a horse.
He traverses the long fields,
The night is frightful;
It has a deep fear that burns
The very root of one's heart.
-"Oh knight, my good knight,
Be careful with the dragon
Who is hiding behind the clouds
By the lake's shore".
-"Fear not, my darling star, oh no!
Do not be afraid, now!
For I'm not afraid at all:
I want to face it."
The dragon, furious, roars;
It breathes fire through its nose.
A hundred thunderbolts shine
Under its feet.
-"Oh knight, my dear little knight...
Oh, if it gets you!
Your shield will be of no use,
For the dragon will suffocate you!"
-"Fear not for, in my hands,
I carry a dagger.
Within this very sharp blade
Death is in hiding."
-"Oh knight, my dear little knight,
Just go home."
-"I don't want to go home
Without my lady.
Do not send me home yet
For she needs me!".
The knight, who was so brave,
Ran into the fray.
- The dragon was blowing, though its mouth,
Fire and shrapnel.
Nothing can stop that great warrior:
His sword's blows
Over the enemy's neck
Fall with sharp precision...
The firmament is filled with blood,
The night turns red;
Fiery roses that explode,
Just like a bellow.
Under the shade of the trees
The dragon lies dead.
Let the bells ring and ring,
Let them toll loudly.
Let them toll both night and day,
Which is a good deed.
Across the fields, in the dark,
The horse is running.
