A nobleman desired portraits from his progeny

To remind of his noble birth with luster

For him being born of high standing

Gave him right to power and the princely throne

To this prince came Eulenspiegel (1)

Who as a painter was well favoured with this Lord

But Till advised him while yet leaving,

Only honest folk might see his works of art

Life was convenient for Till

It was forbidden to behold his work

The prince and his court all longed for the hour

To spot the liars among their assembly

Soon the time had come, Till presented with gallantry

To everyone the still blank canvas

For he had eaten well at the royal court

But not put a single finger to the brush

Fear and Dismay arose thus in the crowd

Everyone asked " am I found out ? "

" what lovely paintwork " the pale prince commended

And in hypocrisy the whole court joined in

Found out by Till, they all went their way

He glanced at their slight dismay

The zany prank had exposed them all

For Hypocrites come a dime a dozen
