Monte Castelo [English translation]
Monte Castelo [English translation]
Even if I spoke in the tongues of men
Or spoke in the tongues of angels
Without love, I would be nothing1
It is only love, only love2
Who knows the truth.
Love is good, it wishes no harm
It is not jealous or vain
Love is a fire that burns unseen
A scorching wound that is not felt
It is to rejoice in your sadness
It's a quiet and deranging pain3
Even if I spoke in the tongues of men
Or spoke in the tongues of angels
Without love, I would be nothing
It's to want nothing more than to be loved
It's a solitary promenade through a crowd
It's to not be sated when it's just enough
It's a feeling that grows the more it's shared4
It's to become a prisoner by choice
And surrender to the losing army
It's to swear allegiance to your murderer
So contradicting to itself is the very same Love5
I'm awake while everyone sleeps
Everyone sleeps, everyone sleeps
Now I know in part
Then we shall see face to face6
It is only love, only love
Who knows the truth
Even if I spoke in the tongues of men
Or spoke in the tongues of angels
Without love, I would be nothing
1. This is a reference to 1st Corinthians 13:12. The title refers to the Battle of Monte Castello, arguably the most important battle Brazil took part in during WWII, and therefore an act of war and destruction. The title is in opposition to the content of the lyrics.3. These verses correspond to the first stanza in Camöes' Sonnet 114. Continuing with Camöes' poem, these verses make up the second stanza5. The first three verses make up the third stanza, and the last verse summarizes the last stanza in Comöes' poem6. This is a reference to 1st Corinthians 13:12
