Шаман [Shaman] [English translation]
Шаман [Shaman] [English translation]
I darned skins with a curved needle,
Sun above the lake
Swam in fog like fresh blood
In blue milk.
Wolves cry beyond a distant knoll -
Seems it'll be autumn soon.
Laikas* at the campsite echo their howl,
The antlers on the deer are red.
He's a witch, a sorcerer, a shaman, he is cursed
In the three worlds by his own hand.
Stones dance under his foot
Or is it the tambourine in my chest?
Soon there'll be snow, soon there'll be ice, soon I'll be hunting
A deer with seven antlers.
Give me seven locks from your braid, maiden -
Oh, cut them without looking,
Weave me a bowstring!
As transparent cold blew from the North
He spoke the words:
"Like earth in winter won't remember the sun,
So I too won't remember him".
I smoked fish with tutsan and clover
Sing, subdue-grass!*
With an arrow, i drew symbols upon it
Oh, with a red-hot arrow
Bearing a forbidden name!
You'll forget one sunset
Then the next one,
Dogs will finish the fish
Mixing bones with ashes.
Days are shorter than nights,
And my braid is growing long,
And laikas are straining their chains
And sky is in their eyes.
Laikas sense a trail
Bloody like spindle tree flowers,
And once more a wild deer
Is racing towards crimson dawn.
Again he dissolves
In a fog that's sticky like blood,
And there's sun in between
In between seven blood-red antlers!
Is it you my dogs are chasing, shaman,
Towards winter?
Have you not betrayed yourself,
With a bow and a bowstring?
Before the night fog falls
Upon snowy hills
I need to find a witch-deer
Oh, the fool!
If only i could remember his forbidden name
The shaman would turn back into himself again,
That name is hidden between his seven antlers.
He will again stand before me,
Like a leaf before grass!*
