Szent László 1. Rész [English translation]
Louis the Great1commands thusly
Go my servant, Endre Laczfi!
Give the orders immediately
Put a hefty scimitar in your belt
The Tatars2are a great threat
For Moldavia3, our border defense
Against the Tatars take the Székelys4
With ten thousand Székely lófős5you'll advance
Thus Endre Laczfi leaves from Buda
And starts his journey for Nagy-Várad
Though the millet fields of Kunság
His good cohorts are going across
On the gravely streets of Várad
Clacks the steel toes of their horses
The glint of weapons shines so far
Their steps are booming in the distance
Ladislaus hears it in the temple
That's near the bank of the Körös6
The light returns into his eyes
He's starting to draw breath
The stone cover of his coffin
Almost three centuries are weighing it down
It's time to air out a bit
This narrow house
He fastens his sword on his belt
And grips his battle-axe
The one he used in the east long ago
To hurt the pagans to the max
He adjusts his crown
That was tilted on his head
- Maybe around midnight
- The iron doors he spreads
And he steps out onto the square
And he's heading to the right
Where stands tall in the dark
His cast metal statue on a horse
The steed can feel him coming
It neighs in frenzy, greets him loud
Bucks the huge iron horse
Hurling the iron rider to the ground
It's bridle is foaming with combat zeal
It paws, whinnies and blows flames
Ladislaus rattles into the saddle
And gives a sharp jolt with his spurs
From the tall pedestal
They jump far from the stone leg7
Through mountains and valleys carries
The horse the long departed
The calvary is but a jump away
And nine to get to Király-hágó8
They hear the clacking of the hooves
The wild Székelys and the Csángó9
But the horse and it's rider
Can't be seen by living eyes
It's wonderful what miracles
God's will can devise
Laczfi fought the pagans
For three whole days
The Székelys' heart was fully in it
But their numbers didn't raise
While the Tatars - as many as chaff
Or like the sand in the plains
- They shriek and spray their arrows
Blocking the sun's rays
Now the Székelys barely hold on
The great flag could be taken from us
But a roar explodes:
"God, my Lord! It's Saint Ladislaus!
Just like lions, the Székelys attack
In a tough situation but not yet beat...
Now on the ridge, invisible
Clacks the toes of the metal steed
