Het Dorp [English translation]
Het Dorp [English translation]
At home I still have a postcard
On which a church, a cart with horse
A butcher shop J. van der Ven
A pub, a lady on a bicycle
It probably says nothing to you
But it is where I was born
This village, I still remember how it was
The farmer's children in class
A cart rattling on the cobbles
The town hall with a pump in front of it
A sand path between wheat
The livestock, the farms
And along my father's garden path
I saw the tall trees standing
I was a child and didn't know better
Than that it would never pass
How simple they lived back then
In simple house among greenery
With farm flowers and a hedge
But apparently they lived the wrong way
The village is modernized
And now they are on the right track
Because see, how rich life is
They see the television quiz
And live in concrete boxes
With a lot of glass, then you can see
How the sofa looks in Mien's house
And her dresser with plastic roses
The village youth cling to each other a bit
In mini-skirt and beatle-hair
And cheer along with beat music
I know it is their right
The new time, just like what you say
But it makes me a bit melancholic
I have known theirs fathers
They bought liquorice for a penny
I saw their mothers jump rope
That village from then, it is over
This is all what stayed for me
A postcard and memories
When I saw the tall trees standing
Along my father's garden path
I was a child, how could I know
That that would pass forever
